Coming down a mountain behind a long line of cars can mean repeatedly applying the brakes to manage your speed. For one Twin Peaks Auto Repair customer, that drive was followed by an unsettling symptom the next day: significant vibration whenever he braked in his 2010 Dodge Caravan.

Concerned that something had broken in the front end, he brought the van to our Longmont shop. Our technician identified a brake rotor problem—and explained why the previous day’s drive likely contributed.

From a Front-End Concern to a Brake Diagnosis

Vibration can make it difficult for a driver to tell where a problem originates. In this case, an inspection at Twin Peaks determined that the rotors needed replacement because of heat-related damage.

When the customer mentioned the mountain descent and repeated braking, our technician explained that this was the most likely source of the excessive heat.

The brake pads had also been affected. Our technician described them as “baked” or glazed and recommended replacing them along with the rotors.

How Heat Can Affect Rotors and Brake Pads

Braking converts the vehicle’s motion into heat. Repeated brake applications during a long descent can place a substantial heat load on the braking system.

Drivers often hear the term “warped rotors” when discussing brake vibration. The underlying problem can involve uneven rotor surfaces, thickness differences or uneven deposits of brake-pad material. Excessive heat can also glaze the pads’ friction surfaces.

For this Caravan, the diagnosis pointed to heat-related problems affecting both the rotors and pads.

The Repair and Result

Twin Peaks replaced the brake rotors and brake pads, then road-tested the Caravan to verify that the vibration was gone. The customer also confirmed that the vibration had disappeared after getting the van back.

The experience illustrates why an inspection matters: what felt like a broken front-end component turned out to be a brake problem requiring attention to both the rotors and pads.

Brake Vibration? Have the Cause Checked

Shaking or pulsation when braking can have several causes. A vehicle’s symptoms, inspection findings and recent driving history help guide the diagnosis.
